(23 Sep 1999) English/Nat SAM FOX DOES THE FUNKY CHICKEN AT RED OR DEAD

Story: London Fashion Week
Location: London
Date: 21st September 1999

London Fashion Week began in earnest on Tuesday with a wacky show courtesy of RED OR DEAD. But designer WAYNE HEMINGWAY almost overshadowed his own well-received Spring 2000 line by sending a Disney-style chicken and rabbit down the catwalk. Perhaps it was to reinforce Hemingway’s reputation as a wacky alternative designer.

Either way, they were quickly forgotten when former topless model and pop star SAMANTHA FOX made a rare appearance in a shiny pink tassled dress, along with several other scantily-clad glamour girls who shimmied down the runway before making a half-hearted attempt to lap dance.

Slapstick aside, the clothes that came later got a warm reception from fashion critics. African prints on halterneck sundresses, a dress made of large wooden beads, and shirts cleverly fashioned from J-cloths were among the garments on offer. The clothes fulfilled the typical Red or Dead style – urban and trendy.

Meanwhile, those searching for the Next Big Thing found a possible contender in ROBERT CARY-WILLIAMS, the designer once known for cutting up designer clothes by the likes of Jean-Paul Gaultier. He later took the scissors to his own garments, leading a school of neo-deconstructivists that includes the American Susan Cianciolo and Jessica Ogden.

His latest collection is rather more finished than past offerings, described by the designer himself as “cleaner, quite beautiful and much more refined”.

“Last season’s show was more impulsive, much more rushed,” he says. “This time, although I chopped up the toile as I normally do, the result turned out more finished, more controlled.”

There was also colour to the collection – previously he has used neutrals – and even a final section of “Hollywood dresses with a difference.” Helping him out on the catwalk were top models Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.

With the likes of Alexander McQueen in New York, Cary-Williams is being saddled with playing the part of London’s next big designer.

But despite the absence of big names, fashion watchers are anticipating an exciting London Fashion Week, further bolstering the city’s role as the hub of burgeoning European urban style.
