Isadora Duncan – Modern Dance Pioneer

by Maria

Isadora Duncan (1877-1927) was one of the pioneers of Modern Dance.  Modern Dance styles, generally speaking, are any form of dance which strays from the more rigid disciplines of ballet, jazz, tap, or anything that has a name, and it is beautiful.

Modern Dance celebrates the body’s natural movements and draws inspiration, in the best of times, in the moment.  Duncan’s vision, as it began to form, was to return dance to an art form and less of a discipline.  She succeeded, and any number of modern dancers today owe a great debt to Isadora and her contemporaries, who took off the yoke of traditional dance styles and taught their bodies to move freely.

Finally, a clip from the movie “Isadora” where Duncan is played by Vanessa Redgrave. Enjoy!
