Singlish and being kiasu are the hallmarks of being Singaporean today, but what about back in the late 1960s, when Singapore was just finding its feet as an independent nation? For his new photo series celebrating Singapore, photographer Jayden Tan attempts to understand just that – but through fashion. From finding out about a unique pageant costume called the Cheongarong, to learning about Singapore’s very own ‘Christian Dior of the East’, Jayden dives into the wild and colourful world of local fashion in the late 1960s, and discovers one glorious fact – that Singaporeans back then, ladies and gentlemen, were most certainly not boring.
