Are you planning a vacation? Is it a vacation or a business trip you’re planning? If you are not a seasoned traveler, then perhaps a brief lesson in packing for a trip would be beneficial. A friend of mine recently planned an extensive journey with her family, and she became so engrossed in the actual travel arrangements that, when it came down to the wire. She realized she hadn’t even packed her suitcases, and she stayed up late the night before her trip doing laundry and trying to figure out what she should bring with her. She didn’t get enough sleep, which resulted in her forgetting some essential details. To be safe, let us say that they will remain “unmentionable,” if you know what I mean. To that end, whenever I travel, I prepare a list of the items I’ll need and a quick tip for the morning of my trip that has previously saved me both time and money while on vacation.
1. Never Underestimate Space
Never underestimate the amount of space you’ll need in your suitcase. If you are a woman, it will be too small for you most of the time. You always have the impression that you’ll have more space than you do.
2. Carry it On!
I invest in a high-quality carry-on bag. More pockets and zipper compartments are always a plus, so look for one with plenty of them. If your bags are delivered to your destination with you, make sure to bring a change of clothes, undergarments, and extra shoes just in case.
3. Tag It & Bag It
Always make sure that your luggage tags identify who the items belong to. If your luggage is a standard color or style, consider placing some distinctive stickers on it to make it more easily distinguishable from the rest of your belongings.
4. Undies for the Win
Make sure to pack at least two extra sets of undergarments for your journey. There’s no telling what might happen while you’re away, and you don’t want to be caught without these essentials.
5. Outfits are In
Keep in mind that you should pack “outfits” rather than just shirts and trousers, blouses and pants, or skirts and trousers. Take care to ensure that all of your clothes, down to your shoes, are in harmony. Make sure to bring the appropriate jewelry for each of these ensembles. Keep in mind to get any matching belts or ties.
6. Dressy not Messy
If you think you might be attending a formal event, make sure you pack something elegant or dressy just in case it happens.
7. Plan Ahead
Pack everything, except what you will need the following day, the night before. Prepare your travel clothes by laying them out on the bed, but do not pack the toiletries you need the next day.
8. Follow Your Routine
Do your regular daily routine the morning of and after each task, put away the item you used during the previous lesson. For example, after brushing your teeth, put the toothbrush and toothpaste in your bag. Put on your cosmetics, then pack them away; blow-dry your hair, then pack it away; and so forth. This will ensure that you have everything you need for your morning routine in your bag when you leave the house.
These are just a few simple suggestions to keep in mind when traveling to ensure that you don’t forget anything important. Making a list of things I don’t want to forget has significantly less stressful my trips and vacations.
