London Fashion Week continues on Tuesday with the final eight shows of the event.
Collections from British and international designers are on display at Britain’s definitive fashion spectacle, offering the media and fashion fanatics a preview of upcoming trends.
But while designers like Alexander McQueen and John Galliano stole the limelight earlier this year, it is Britain’s female designers that capture the imagination this time around.
Designers from across the world continue to delight the crowds at London Fashion Week.
Competition to produce the “look of the moment” ensures originality, flair and style.
But while Givenchy’s Alexander McQueen and Dior’s John Galliano stole the limelight earlier this year, this time around the catwalks seem dominated by female designers.
British female designers have held their own since the 1960s, when Mary Quant introduced her daring mini-skirts.
The 1970s was the decade of the flowing chiffon dresses of Zandra Rhodes and the outlandish punk look created by the doyenne of British fashion – Vivienne Westwood.
And the 1990s are the decade of young designers such as Bella Freud.
Freud, who worked as Westwood’s assistant until starting her own label in 1990, showed her collection at The Fridge nightclub in Brixton, south London, on Monday.
Over the years she has steadily built up a large clientele in Japan and has customers all over Europe and the U-S-A.
For fashion experts, it comes a no surprise that female designers are proving a hit on the catwalks.

“Because in the end we’re the ones that are going to be wearing the clothes, well ladies lines anyway and I just think that it’s great, it’s actually by wearing things, you’re very attentive by what other people are wearing, other women are wearing. Because you’re going to be wearing it yourself it’s so much easier. I mean you try samples on and you try new things on and you know immediately if it’s going to work or not.”

Another British designer who continues to prove popular is Betty Jackson – whose designs are a big hit across the world, especially in Asia.
Awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her contribution to the British fashion industry, she has become a household name.
She believes her success if partly due to the fact that – as a woman – she knows what women want.
(English)
“I think women sort of understand it rather more and I think you have probably more of a practical approach. I don’t think I want to stand women up on a pedestal. For me clothes have to work for women and I believe that modern women want uncomplicated dressing.”
