Ireland’s knitting queen wins over London fashion

The best kept secret in Irish fashion, Lainey Keogh, put on a rare display of her stylish talents for the discerning punters and impressed critics at London’s Fashion Week on Monday, February 23. She created an Eastern fantasy of gold threads and precious stones for the autumn and winter collection. Her models moved down the catwalks with gold leaves in their hair and heavy plaits with woven long chenille gowns with wide, jewel coloured belts of silken threads. Highlight of the collection was a red crochet dress and chenille opera dress and chenille opera coat. A Keogh sweater takes her 15 handknitters a month to create. Meanwhile over in Kings Cross, Owen Gaster put on a show that undoubtedly brought showmanship to the fore, but divided the critics over the originality of his latest collection. Last year, Gaster put his show on in a pool hall. This year for the Hold On Tight show he opted for a fairground in a warehouse, completed with dodgem rides, candyfloss stalls and fairground shouters. In these strange surroundings Gaster paraded a collection where pool tailoring and slash-backed dresses dominated. There were plenty of stilettos and short skirts on display in a collection that had the emphasis fully on fun.
