In the 1980 television shows became really popular. Shows like Miami Vice were watched by most people. In turn, the eighties big hair styles and shoulder pads were copied and idolized by most. Feature films were becoming more prevalent. Examples include, E.T, Back to the Future and Indiana Jones. Music also had a huge influence on fashion at that time. There was a rise of solo acts unlike the seventies groups. Prince introduced a new style of music and fashion. When Micheal Jackson had left the Jackson 5, he created an iconic style. Madonna was a huge fashion icon. Each icon was known for their different fashion style. They influenced the younger generation on a globally.
There was a rise in professional women so suits were beginning to be seen as social wear. The padded shoulders were a very popular trend that created a strong silhouette. People sought bright colors and neons. They were seen on dresses with an oversized bow and bold prints were seen on oversized T shirts and dresses. There were off the shoulder shirts, crop tops , rolled up sleeves, matching socks, sweaters tied on the waist. These were all daily trends seen on women. Other fashion trends included tight leather pants, stonewashed jeans, and corduroy pants. Younger women liked to have the bra exposed seen either though a mesh top or underneath an oversized denim jacket. This look was popularized by Madonna.
In the early 80s, coming from the punk scene, the more crazy dressers were less interested in the punk statement but more in the fashion aspect. They were looking for new ideas for attention to themselves. This new romanticism look was flamboyant. For the new romantics there was an effort to look beautiful, luxuriant and attractive in a narcissistic way.
In the 1980s there was a post punk gothic style carried on from the seventies. The style included black clothing made out of weird materials like leather, fishnet and lace. Women liked to wear corsets. Long hair, pale skin and heavy makeup was seen on them. The punk style came from being seen in bands including Guns N’ Roses. They had jean jackets attached with safety pins, patches, buttons and different bits of fabric.
There was an emphasis on a healthy lifestyle so more people were exercising and many fitness videos were on the market. Jane Fonda promoted casual clothing and gym wear in her video. Clothing such as leotards, leggings and legwarmers became very popular. Women wore them with elastic headbands. The leotards were made with bright colors, stripes and polka dots. Even movies helped popularize the trend with movies like Fame and Flashdance. They showed ripped oversized sweatshirts with a bare shoulder exposed including oversized jumpers.
Costume jewelry became popular. The bigger the better is how it went. Items included huge gold or pearl earrings worn with diamante jewelry all the time. Princess Dianna set the trend for lower heeled footwear which helped the trend of high heels and flats being worn with socks. At the end of the eighties women wore wedges. Doc Martens were still popular from the seventies. The iconic quilted Chanel bag became very popular with millions of ladies buying copies of the bag. Accessories such as swatch watches, high-tops, slap bracelets, friendship bracelets, hoop earrings and scrunchies were everyday accessories in that time. Crimped, curled, frizzy styles with bangs, platinum blonde, side ponytails and sticking up fringes were super popular hair styles. Makeup was very vivid with light pink lips, glitter, blue eye shadows and beauty moles.
In the early 90s fashion was mainly loose fitting and colorful. Some women, however, went for the grunge look and color was the enemy. T-shirts were still big and shorts were extra long. The tapered pants were still a big deal. Both boy and girls wore baseball caps in many different ways. Women wore sweaters with a turtleneck under it. Then grudge look came on the scene. Everyone wanted to wear flannel shirts. Teens wanted vintage authentic hole-ridden jeans to wear over top of their long john stockings.
Hip hop artists influenced fashion in the early 90s and it was becoming increasingly more mainstream. Because of the growing popularity of hip hop music, urban styles were seen everywhere. By the late 1990s hip hop style was the most popular among young people.
By the late 1990s, the rave culture swept through. People were looking for clothes that were glamorous again. At this point the grungy styles of the early nineties were old news. Looking like you had money was cool again. The name brand designers were came back in style. However, in the 1990s, musicians had a greater influence on what young people wore than designers.
