From whalebone corsets to going commando, the evolution of women’s fashion since 1850 has been influenced by world events such as women’s suffrage, international trade, industrialization, and wartime rationing, as well as by visionary designers including Coco Chanel, Paul Poiret, and Yves St. Laurent. Art and inventions such as the zipper, the brassiere, and synthetic dyes changed what women wore.  This program features a brief history of how fashion has adapted to and been influenced by changing times. From haute couture to home sewing, the clothes we wear have a history. A former designer for Ralph Lauren, Liza Nash Taylor offers a visual history of fashion evolution and revolution in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A PowerPoint presentation includes beautiful photographs of garments as well as illustrations.

Sponsored by WriterHouse, promoting the creation and appreciation of writers.

Liza Nash Taylor is the author of the recently released historical novel Etiquette for Runaways, set in Keswick, Virginia; Prohibition-era New York City; and Jazz-age Paris in 1925. The novel was the book of the month for August from 50Plus Today and was named one of the “Best Beach Reads of 2020” by Parade.com. A self-described empty nester with attitude, Liza lives in Keswick, in an old farmhouse which is a setting in her novels.
