Is it simply a question of clothing? Film stars of the ‘golden age’ of Hollywood were actually never revered for their dress alone. Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper, and Cary Grant were, and still are, eulogised for what they represented, which was often a moral integrity or an aversion to excess, of which their dress was a key signifier.
